DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
It is found in southeastern Europe, central Asia and southeastern China. In Romania nests in the eastern part of Dobrogea, the Danube Delta and Istria. It prefers brackish lakes, lagoons and marshes of the plains.
 
DESCRIPTION
Ruddy Shelduck’s body plumage is orange-brown and the head is colored. The wings are white with black flight feathers.

 





REPRODUCTION
Mating period starts in March-April. Ruddy Shelduck it will breed on cliffs,in burrows, tree holes or crevices distant from water, laying 6-16 creamy-white eggs.

 

DIET
It feeds on aquatic and terrestrial plants, shoots, buds and invertebrates.
 
SOCIAL BEHAVIOR
The Ruddy Shelduck is usually found in pairs or small groups and rarely forms large flocks. However, wintering gatherings can be very large. In captivity this species is generally aggressive and antisocial and is best housed in pairs.
 
LONGEVITY
They can live between 5-15 years.
